01 / CONTEXT

Why it happened

Hideyoshi left a child heir and a council intended to balance leading lords and administrators. Tokugawa Ieyasu’s growing influence brought him into conflict with Ishida Mitsunari and other figures who claimed to defend the Toyotomi order.

02 / EVENT

What happened

On 21 October 1600, the armies met in the Sekigahara basin. Fighting was intense but relatively brief. The movement or defection of forces associated with Kobayakawa Hideaki and other commanders helped collapse the western position.

03 / AFTERMATH

What came next

Ieyasu redistributed lands on a vast scale and punished western leaders. In 1603 he became shogun. The Toyotomi house survived in Osaka until 1615, so Sekigahara did not by itself complete Tokugawa rule.

04 / SIGNIFICANCE

Why it still matters

The battle was both a military encounter and a test of coalition politics. Hostages, marriage, territorial promises and uncertain loyalties mattered as much as battlefield numbers.
