01 / CONTEXT

Why it happened

After the defeat of the Taira, Yoritomo built a network of warrior vassals and obtained court recognition for provincial military appointments. His authority depended on negotiation with the imperial court as well as command of the eastern warriors.

02 / EVENT

What happened

In 1192, the court appointed Yoritomo seii taishogun. The title enhanced legitimacy, while the practical work of government continued through the Kamakura offices, land stewardship and personal bonds between lord and vassal.

03 / AFTERMATH

What came next

After Yoritomo’s death, the Hojo family increasingly controlled the government through the regency. The shogun remained important, but the balance among regents, vassals and the court repeatedly changed.

04 / SIGNIFICANCE

Why it still matters

The appointment is a useful landmark, not a single founding instant. Reading it alongside the earlier creation of offices and appointments gives a more accurate picture of how Japan’s first durable warrior government emerged.
