01 / CONTEXT

Why it happened

The Genpei War had divided elite warrior networks and the imperial court. By 1185, Minamoto forces had driven the Taira westward, but the Taira still carried the young Emperor Antoku and imperial regalia.

02 / EVENT

What happened

Fleets fought in the fast tidal waters of the strait. As the balance turned, leading Taira figures and members of the imperial household entered the sea. Emperor Antoku died, while one of the three imperial regalia was lost.

03 / AFTERMATH

What came next

Minamoto no Yoritomo consolidated authority from Kamakura, using appointments and vassal ties to govern warriors across the provinces. The victory did not immediately create a finished shogunate, but it removed the strongest rival military coalition.

04 / SIGNIFICANCE

Why it still matters

Dan-no-ura marks the violent end of Taira court dominance and a decisive step toward warrior government. Its memory also shaped literature, performance and coastal religious sites.
